The Route

As our aim is to complete the journey from Land’s End to John O’Groats in five days, we have divided the route into five sections. We have also planned a route that avoids all motorways, except that is for the short stretch of the M48 that crosses the River Severn at Chepstow.

Day 1 – Saturday 14th July 2012

Land’s End to Burnham-on-Sea approx 190 miles

From Lands’ End join A30 north via Penzance, Camborne, Three Burrows and Summercourt. At St Dennis turn towards Newquay then join A39 to Wadebridge. Stay on A39 via Camelford, Bude, Clovelly, Northam to Barnstaple. Continue on A39 via Lynton/Lynmouth, Minehead, Williton to Bridgewater. At Bridgewater on to A38 towards Highbridge then pick up B3141 into Burnham on Sea.

Day 2 – Sunday 15th July 2012

Burnham-on-Sea to Tarporley approx 167 miles

From Burnham on Sea rejoin A38 towards Bristol via Rooks Bridge, Axbridge, Bristol International Airport then on to A4 to Avonmouth. Follow A403 northwards to Severn Bridge (M48). Cross bridge. At Chepstow take B4293 to Monmouth via New Inn, Trelleck then join A49 through Hereford, Leominster, Ludlow, Craven Arms, Shrewsbury, Whitchurch to Tarporley.

Day 3

Tarporley to Langholm approx 182 miles

From Tarporley continue on A49 through Warrington, Ashton-in-Makerfield and Wigan to Preston. Join A6 through Garstang, Lancaster and Carnforth. At junction with A590 on to A591 towards Kendal. Rejoin A6 to Penrith and Carlisle then join A7 to Langholm.

Day 4

Langholm to Fort William approx 198 miles

Continue on A7 via Hawick, Galashiels, Bonnyrigg then take A720 Edinburgh Ring Road and follow to Forth Road Bridge. Other side of Bridge take A823 to Dunfermline, A907 to Clackmannan, Alloa and at Bridge of Allan join A9. At Dunblane A820 to Doune and A84 to Callander then A85 to Crianlarich to join A82 north to Glen Coe and Fort William.

Day 5

Fort William to John O’Groats approx 185 miles

From Fort William continue on A82 to Inverness

(OR alternative route –At Spean Bridge take A86 to Kingussie then join A9 to Inverness via Aviemore.)

At Inverness stay on A9 to Latheron then A99 to John O’Groats.
